Recently, my dad and I toured a newly completed home that Banbury had supplied hardware for.
Walking through homes is a little different for me than it is for most people.
After twenty years in the decorative hardware business, I can’t help but notice details. I look at the cabinetry, the trim package, the appliances, the lighting, the hardware, and how all of those decisions work together—or don’t.
It’s part of the job.
What made this visit interesting wasn’t what I noticed.
It was what my dad noticed.
As we moved from room to room, he kept coming back to the same thought.
Something didn’t quite feel right.
Not bad.
Not cheap.
Not poorly built.
Just... off.
The funny thing is that my dad has absolutely no background in design.
He couldn’t tell you the difference between one cabinet package and another. He doesn’t spend his time thinking about hardware, appliance selections, mill work details, or floor plans.
If you asked him what specifically felt wrong, he probably couldn’t tell you.
He just felt it.
That got me thinking.
I’ve spent most of my career around homes. I think about details for a living. I’m paid to notice the things that most people walk right past.
My dad isn’t.
Yet somehow we arrived at the same conclusion.
The more we talked, the more I realised he was noticing something that people notice all the time, even when they can’t explain it.
The house had beautiful elements.
There were premium appliances, custom details, thoughtfully selected hardware, and plenty of evidence that real money had been spent throughout the project.
But there were also decisions that felt disconnected from the rest of the home.
Not bad decisions.
Just different decisions.
Some selections felt highly intentional. Others felt purely practical.
Individually, every choice made sense.
Collectively, they didn’t always feel like they belonged to the same story.
That’s when another home came to mind.
A few years ago, I toured a house built by a friend in Vancouver.
I remember walking through it and being struck by how little stood out.
That sounds like criticism.
It isn’t.
In fact, it was exactly the opposite.
Nothing was demanding attention.
Nothing was trying to prove how expensive it was.
Nothing felt out of place.
Everything simply belonged.
The cabinetry made sense with the architecture.
The hardware made sense with the cabinetry.
The appliances supported the overall design rather than competing with it.
Every decision seemed aware of the decisions around it.
The result wasn’t flashy.
It was cohesive.
And maybe that’s what my dad was picking up on.
Most people think quality is the result of expensive decisions.
I’m not convinced.
I think quality is the result of aligned decisions.
You can buy premium appliances.
You can choose beautiful hardware.
You can invest in custom mill work.
Those things matter.
But people don’t experience homes one decision at a time.
They experience the entire space.
The same thing happens everywhere else.
A company can spend a fortune on branding while delivering a poor customer experience.
A restaurant can serve incredible food and still leave guests underwhelmed.
A leader can have vision but lack consistency.
The individual parts may be excellent.
But people don’t experience the parts.
They experience the whole.
That’s why my dad’s observation stayed with me.
He couldn’t explain what he was seeing.
Neither could most people walking through that house.
But I suspect many of them would leave with a similar impression.
Because people are far more perceptive than we give them credit for.
They notice when things belong together.
They notice when they don’t.
They notice consistency.
They notice intention.
Long before they understand it, they feel it.
Maybe that’s why the best homes, businesses, teams, and relationships have so much in common.
They aren’t built around one extraordinary decision.
They’re built around hundreds of decisions pulling in the same direction.
People may never know exactly why something feels right.
But they know when it does.
They feel it before they understand it.

This is thoughtful, insightful and well told! I love the storytelling through your dad’s eyes. Great point that individual pieces can be luxurious, but how they all work together is what defines elegance.
